Description
Many Earth processes, such as landslides, earthquakes, floods, and volcanic eruptions, can be dangerous to people. Geologists seek to understand these processes well enough to avoid constructing critical buildings in potentially hazardous areas. If geologists can create maps of locations that have already flooded, they can also create maps of areas that may flood in the future. These maps can guide community development and evaluate where flood protection or flood insurance is required.
